Upcoming WMAA events for December

Tuesday, 26 November, 2013

The Waste Management Association of Australia (WMAA) is holding two events next week.

On 3 December, the WMAA Carbon and Landfill divisions will be hosting a webinar on the carbon tax repeal and the new framework. Interested parties are invited to join the online forum that will look at the repeal of the existing carbon price regime, including the politics, timing and implications for the waste industry and the update on the emission reduction fund.

The presenters include:

  • Michael Voros, Special Counsel, Herbert Smith Freehills. Voros is a lawyer for waste, climate change, environment, planning, electricity, water and other regulatory issues. He chairs the WMAA WA carbon group and recently led the preparation of WMAA’s National Carbon Division’s submissions on the carbon tax repeal.
  • Elisa de Wit, Partner & Head of Climate Change, Norton Rose Australia. De Wit is a partner in the Melbourne office of Norton Rose Australia and heads the Australian climate change practice of the Norton Rose Group. She chairs the WMAA Victorian Carbon Committee and has authored a guide to the CFI on behalf of the Carbon Markets Institute.

The only requirements for the webinar are a computer with an internet connection and a phone. The event will be held from 2-3 pm AEDT and attendees must RSVP by 29 November.

Two days later in the Illawarra, NSW, the Australasian Industrial Ecology Network will host a forum showcasing patented technologies and processes for the remanufacture of waste. Higher recycling rates based on life-cycle methodology can provide a solution for materials scarcity, and businesses are demanding a circular economy that recovers more of the valuable materials locked up in waste.

To be successful, this circular economy must re-engineer itself through technical innovation and diversification. It will need to produce cleaner value-added materials from waste, using smarter extraction methods. Collaboration, cooperation and partnerships will allow everyone to create value as we reduce and remanufacture waste.

Presentations will cover:

  • How smarter extraction methods create wealth from waste.
  • How we are re-engineering the waste sector to be an integrated, value-add supply chain and secondary commodities trader.
  • Increased recycling builds business resilience to materials scarcity.

There will be the opportunity for networking with a light lunch/refreshments served after the presentations, along with a display of remanufactured materials and products. A free bus tour to Kangaroo Valley will allow attendees to inspect recently constructed RMS road using recycled commercial and industrial waste.

The event will run from 9.00 am -1.30 pm. Attendees must RSVP by 2 December.
