Goodman Fielder tackles commercial food waste
According to RMIT, a quarter of a million tonnes of food is thrown out by Australian foodservice venues each year. In addition, venues are discarding approximately 40% of the food they purchase for stock over the duration of a year.
Motivated by its ambition to halve food waste by 2030, Goodman Fielder Food Service presented an interactive panel event, ‘Saving Food in Commercial Kitchens’, along with Saveful ambassador Chef Matt Moran to encourage positive change in the foodservice sector.
The interactive session provided practical tips for foodservice professionals to apply food saving methods, sustainable sourcing, and ensuring time and cost efficiencies within their kitchens.
Along with the company’s food waste reduction commitments, Goodman Fielder is a founding signatory to the Australian Food Pact, which brings organisations across the entire food value-chain together to develop and share solutions and implement change at scale.
Goodman Fielder Australia General Manager of Foodservice & Industrial Joseph D’Andrea said, “Connecting with industry leaders at this event, united by a shared goal to reduce food waste, was incredibly rewarding. Given our extensive reach in the hospitality, foodservice and retail sectors, we have a critical role to play in this arena and making collaborative efforts like this is crucial for driving a sustainable future in foodservice. We also know that our customers are seeking solutions to drive value and do more with less; that’s where we believe we can help.
“We are fortunate to have the support of Saveful and Chef Matt Moran for this event, made possible through our Praise brand’s founding partnership with Saveful, which underscores our shared dedication to saving food in homes as well as commercial kitchens,” D’Andrea added.
Speaking at the event, Moran said, “With the reduced revenue margins and changing consumer expectations that we see today, small changes in kitchen practices can lead to big savings in both costs and environmental impact. Events like these share the knowledge and tools amongst foodservice professionals to minimise waste, enhance kitchen efficiencies and deliver exceptional dishes, while doing their bit for the planet.”
Saveful CEO Kim McDonnell added, “Saveful empowers Australian households with easy, practical tips to reduce food waste and save money on groceries through our user-friendly app. We’re thrilled to join Matt Moran and our friends at Goodman Fielder Food Service to provide actionable food saving tips to our foodservice leaders, helping to make a positive impact on the industry.”
