APC launches recyclability tool for packaging suppliers
The Australian Packaging Covenant (APC) has launched an online tool to help packaging suppliers decide whether their packaging can be classified as recyclable in Australia.
Stan Moore, CEO of the APC, explained, “Until now, there has been no centralised point where brand owners and packaging designers can access clear, consistent and validated information about the recyclability of specific packaging formats from an Australia-wide perspective, for example, a PET bottle with label and closure.
“Over 800 of our industry signatories (representing 80% of retail trade) will soon be able to make informed choices about the recyclability of their packaging and any related recyclability claims.”
The Packaging Recyclability Evaluation Portal (PREP) was developed by Planet Ark and GreenChip, and has been scoped by the APC for signatories. It combines two forms of evaluation:
- An item’s technical recyclability, as ascertained through consultation with materials recycling facility operators and re-processors.
- The degree of access to kerbside recycling services for the item, as established using the local services information compiled on RecyclingNearYou.com.au.
It will also let organisations determine whether changes to the packaging design would alter the classification.
“The PREP is a revolutionary tool bringing together technical recyclability and recycling services elements to assist packaging users,” said Moore. “It is not about material de-selection. It’s about informing users’ choices for sustainable packaging formats and assisting in the design of current and new packaging.”
It is hoped that the introduction and widespread adoption of the PREP will help to reduce consumer confusion about packaging recyclability, increasing recycling volumes and cutting contamination in the recycling stream.
The PREP will be available for use by all APC signatories in early May
