European Community (EC) directives have defined specific limits for heavy metals in plastic. Sets of PE and PVC Reference Materials have been designed for screening heavy metals to check compliance of these limits.
The reference sample sets consist of three individual discs - each disc is 31 mm in diameter and about 13 mm thick. The discs are used by laboratories to check the calibration of their equipment for XRF analysis. Values are given for Br, Hg, Cr, Pb and Cd. A manufacturing process has been developed by Modern Analytical Techniques that yields materials with good homogeneity.
