Car-free day in Melbourne

Thursday, 13 September, 2007

Car-Free Melbourne has announced a proposal for a Melbourne City Car-Free Day. The all-female group presented the idea to a planning committee meeting and were granted tentative council support to look into the details of how it would work for Melbourne.

The purpose of Melbourne's Car-Free Day is to hold a high-profile, non-profit, broadly inclusive event restricting access to cars in some parts of the city for a more "people-friendly' environment.

World Car-Free Day and spin-off sustainable transport events have been held annually since 2000, and currently boasts the participation of 1500 cities around the world.

For Melbourne, this event would reallocate road space to a more efficient and safe arrangement of the urban space.

"We were inspired by the success of last year's Commonwealth Games "” the city was effectively car free and managed to put on a great Melbourne welcome for locals and visitors alike," Alicia Webb, wind engineer said.
