Victoria's Western Water wins national 2009 water-saving award
Victorian Water Corporation's Western Water was successful at the recent national 2009 savewater! awards, winning the prestigious Government - Water Corporations award for its work in developing a state-of-the-art dual pipe recycled water scheme at the Eynesbury Township.
The Eynesbury Township is a six-star environmentally sustainable community and the first new town development in Victoria for over 100 years.
Western Water is among the industry leaders in the re-use of recycled water and it invested in the upgrade of one of its recycled water plants, allowing it to supply Class A recycled water to all homes in Eynesbury.
This Class A recycled water is now being supplied through a ‘purple pipe’ for non-potable domestic use in toilet flushing, garden watering and even firefighting. As a result, almost 60% of water used by Eynesbury households is recycled water.
John Wilkinson, Managing Director Western Water, said: “Eynesbury has provided the blueprint for an exciting and innovative future for Melbourne’s urban planners and developers. This purpose-built township now showcases the future for suburban Melbourne, a future where every drop of water is used wisely and recycling and re-use underpin the environmental footprint of the urban form.”
Nigel Finney, CEO of the savewater! Alliance, paid tribute to their achievement. “Eynesbury represents a paradigm shift in how we will design our towns in future years. Western Water’s leadership in this project provides a model for future generations,” he said.
The prestigious savewater! awards are the leading water sustainability awards in Australia and have provided a platform for recognising excellence across the industry.
