Sustainability in Infrastructure Awards announced

The 2016 Sustainability in Infrastructure Awards were presented by the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) last week in Sydney.

The annual awards recognise projects/assets, organisations and individuals who demonstrate leadership in advancing infrastructure sustainability. They are an important element in the pursuit of ISCA’s mission to improve the productivity and livability of industry and communities through sustainability.

IS Project or Asset Achievement Award

The IS Project/Asset Achievement Award, recognising the IS certified project or asset that has demonstrated the highest overall excellence and sustainability achievement using the IS rating scheme, was won by the Bayswater Level Crossing Removal Project (LCRP) — an alliance between several organisations working to remove two rail level crossings in Bayswater, Victoria. Planned for completion in 2017 at a cost of $177 million, it will be the first project completed under the Level Crossing Removal Program certified with an IS and Green Star As Built rating.

IS Project or Asset Leadership in Infrastructure Sustainability Award

The IS Project or Asset Leadership in Infrastructure Sustainability Award recognised the IS project/asset that exhibits the most outstanding leadership and greatest contribution to advancing infrastructure sustainability in Australasia. It was won by the Melbourne International RoRo Automotive Terminal (MIRRAT) from Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL), whose aim was to build a facility powered entirely from renewable energy by 2020 and made exclusively from recycled materials.

Organisational Leadership in Infrastructure Sustainability Award

The Organisational Leadership in Infrastructure Sustainability Award, recognising the organisation that exhibits the most outstanding performance, leadership and greatest contribution to advancing infrastructure sustainability, was won by sustainability consultancy Edge Environment. Edge was initially involved in developing the IS rating tool and has progressed from providing advice on the first registered and certified projects to become a market leader in IS set-up and delivery.

Individual Leadership in Infrastructure Sustainability Award

The Individual Leadership in Infrastructure Sustainability Award, recognising the individual who best exhibits the most outstanding performance, leadership and greatest contribution to advancing infrastructure sustainability, was won by Glenn Hedges — a trusted advisor to CIMIC Group operational companies and co-founder of ISCA. He is a former ISCA director, a former ISCA company secretary, a current co-chair of ISCA’s Contractor Working Group, an IS Verifier and co-author of ISCA’s new guideline ‘Defining the Business Case for Sustainability in Infrastructure Delivery’.
