Seacell and Seablock membrane systems provide a chemical-free pre-filtration for seawater desalination.

The systems are the latest innovations to come from Siemen’s research and manufacturing facility in Australia and they have been developed specifically to meet the emerging need for large-scale seawater desalination plants in the region.

The Seacell is suitable for use in submerged water treatment systems, while Seablock is used for pressurised water treatment facilities. Both technologies provide the conditioning of the seawater prior to the desalination process.

The membranes require no coagulants or chemicals for active filtration of the seawater and use high permeability membranes. This is claimed to result in less energy use than alternative membrane systems.

The design of the membranes is based on a modular, plug-and-play concept that makes them both time and cost effective to install.

The individual units comprise large arrays that can be connected together to achieve a filtration system of variable capacity. A single modular unit can treat 50 ML of seawater per day.

Because of their modular design, the units are compact, requiring less space within the treatment facility and their length and width when joined together is customised to meet specific user needs.
