Engineering company Black & Veatch, in a joint venture with Civmec (BVCJV), has won a contract to upgrade and expand Western Australia’s largest wastewater treatment plant.

The EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) alliance contract with the Water Corporation will see the companies design and build the new works at Woodman Point Wastewater Treatment Plant, located 22 km south-east of Perth. The plant’s treatment capacity will increase from 140 million to 180 million litres per day and serve 900,000 people when completed.

The upgrade also comprises:

  • an expansion of the existing odour collection and treatment systems;
  • a new grit removal facility;
  • a new flow distribution channel;
  • new sedimentation tanks; and
  • the conversion of the existing batch reactor to a permanent aeration facility.

“We are extremely pleased that the Water Corporation has selected the Civmec and Black & Veatch joint venture as the successful proponent for these critical works,” said Civmec CEO Patrick Tallon. “We see water and wastewater infrastructure as a long-term business opportunity and are committed to working together with our partner to deliver the best project outcome for the Water Corporation and the local community.”

“It’s great to return to Woodman Point,” added James Currie, managing director of Black & Veatch’s water business in Australia. “Teaming with Civmec sharpens our focus on delivering the best long-term value for the community through local participation, capital savings and environmental improvements.”

The BVCJV contract will commence at the end of November 2016, with the work to be completed by end of 2019.
