At the annual general meeting of the Waste Management Association of Australia (WMAA), held this week in Melbourne, WMAA President Miranda Ransome announced the newest appointees to the association’s board of directors.

Tony Kortegast, the managing director of international operations for Tonkin + Taylor, was returned as the vice president. Kortegast has more than 40 years’ experience in geotechnical, solid waste and heavy civil engineering, during which time his work has covered concept development, public and consent processes, and detailed design and construction management.

Adam Faulkner, the general manager of the Eastern Waste Management Authority, was elected by the members to fill the final directly elected board position. Faulkner previously spent 10 years managing waste and energy recovery services as director at Tweed Shire Council, before leaving to head up Hyder Consulting’s Melbourne Waste and Resource Management Unit.

Under WMAA’s new peak membership category, Mark Venhoek and Luke Agati were also appointed to the board.

Venhoek has been chief executive officer of Australia at SUEZ since 6 October 2015. He has significant global experience across the SUEZ group, having previously acted as vice-president of SUEZ's waste operations in China. He has also held positions across Europe including Germany, the Netherlands and Northern Europe.

Agati is the managing director and chief executive officer for waste management and resource recovery organisation REMONDIS Australia. In his role, he introduced the nationalisation and expansion of REMONDIS services and operations and expanded the business to Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

“It’s with great pleasure that I welcome these three new directors onto the board of WMAA,” said Ransome. “These appointments represent WMAA’s strategy of re-engaging with the industry’s leadership while also striking a balance with democratically member-elected board representation.

“Tony’s reappointment of vice president also ensures WMAA has strong and stable leadership, which is essential as we execute our new three-year strategy for the organisation and the industry.”
