Funding for transfer stations at closing landfills

Tuesday, 14 October, 2014

Sustainability Victoria CEO Stan Krpan has announced $3.2 million in Victorian Government funding to develop new transfer stations and resource recovery centres at closing landfill sites in rural and regional Victoria, in addition to the $600,000 already allocated to build new transfer stations on the sites of closed landfills.

New transfer stations with resource recovery facilities are currently being established for closing landfill sites at Mallacoota, Bonang, Bendoc, Benambra and Gelantipy in the East Gippsland Shire and Dartmoor and Nelson in the Glenelg Shire. The funding is being provided as part of the Rural and Regional Landfill Support Program.

“Through this initiative, local communities will continue to have access to waste disposal at these sites, but waste will be transferred to landfills that are more environmentally and economically sustainable,” Krpan said.

“This means that these communities will have access to best-practice waste disposal and resource recovery centres, as well as landfills, reducing environmental and public health risks to the community.”

Krpan said the Rural and Regional Landfill Support Program is part of the government’s $6.85 million commitment to improving waste and resource recovery infrastructure across the state. As part of the program, local councils can apply for up to $500,000 per site to upgrade their infrastructure and commence closure planning at landfills they intend to close.

“It is important that we continue working with councils, business and the community to maximise the economic return from our waste, which in turn supports a healthy environment and economy for all Victorians,” Krpan said.
