Council uses equipment to screen waste

Albury City Council is using a Flip Screen screening and recycling attachment at its Waste Management Centre to screen bricks, concrete and timber out of its landfill operations.

The council’s Landfill Supervisor Maurie Middleton says, “Landfill air space represents money, so the introduction of the Flip Screen has enabled us to undertake more recycling, meaning a lot less material is going into landfill.”

The Flip Screen is a mobile screening attachment that is quickly and easily attached and removed from the carrier machine. It has an inward spiralling screening action that provides a smooth continuous rotating action. It does not use any shaking or vibrating, which ensures the longevity of the carrier machine.

There are models designed to suit 3–50 tonne excavators, small and large skid steers and 7–35 tonne wheel loaders, backhoes and telehandlers.

Albury City Council has chosen the WL180 model Flip Screen to suit its Volvo 110 wheel loader. With a 100 mm screen size on the unit, Maurie Middleton says, “We are screening volumes which have exceeded our expectations.”

The screen size range is from 17–300 mm and can be changed in less than four minutes by one person.

The council is also using the Flip Screen to mix soils and mulch, to enable the output to be used for on-site capping and rehabilitation purposes. In addition, they have selected a 50 and 25 mm screen for applications such as screening crushed concrete, topsoil and various on-site gravels.
