Wednesday, 23 July, 2014

Australian Engineering Week 2014, to be held from 4-10 August, will highlight the impact engineering makes on our lives, our communities and the world around us every day. An array of inspirational, educational and thought-provoking events will be held around Sydney during the week.

Activities will kick off on 4 August with the prestigious Harricks Address, sponsored by IET, at the Museum of Sydney. Engineer, entrepreneur and Sydney Engineering Excellence Award winner Matt Barrie will give a talk on the future of business as he explains why right now is one of the most exciting times in history to be starting or expanding a business.

The Next Step - Careers Talk, sponsored by Hyder Consulting, will be held on 5 August in Chatswood. Experts in engineering and human resource management will dispense tailored, informed and insightful advice on everything from résumé building to internships and interview skills.

The Forum on Sydney Light Rail, sponsored by NSW Trade & Investment, will be held on 6 August at the Powerhouse Museum. Chris Lock, Bruce Johnson, Monica Barone and Dr Tim Williams - key stakeholders in government, engineering, council and city-shaping - will share their views on the controversial subject of connecting the city by light rail.

In addition, the underbelly of iconic structures such as the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, Sydney Harbour Bridge pylons and the Sydney Opera House will be on display, allowing the public a unique perspective of the landmarks via an educational engineering lens.

“The Australian Engineering Week Sydney site tours offer an unprecedented opportunity for our community to see first-hand just how integral engineers are to the landmarks of Sydney that are so important to us all,” said Steve Finlay, GM, Engineers Australia Sydney Division.

“From the Opera House to the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, the incredible engineering mind power behind the making and maintenance of these constructions provides a thoroughly interesting and unique way of viewing our city.”
