Expo pavilion showcases Australian green ambition and capabilities

The sustainable Australian Pavilion is being showcased at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, which started in May.

The expo had a total project value of $83 million, with the Australian Pavilion being the biggest investment Australia has made in a World Expo and is one of the largest commitments to the expo of any nation.

Contracted to the Australian government, Bovis Lend Lease provided engineering design, project management and construction services for the Australian Pavilion. It was completed on time and under budget.

Lend Lease's sponsorship of the Pavilion includes a number of activities such as focusing on the development of the Green Building converter, a new tool demonstrating how the design and use of buildings can be made more sustainable, using the technologies and skills available today to reduce their environmental impact.

The sustainable design features includes solar panels; a rainwater harvest system (or recycle system), electronic commutated motor fans; ‘smart lighting’, sensored lighting throughout the Pavilion washrooms and back-of-house areas; and weathering steel (supplied by BlueScope Steel) used on the facade.

The Pavilion has been recognised by the Expo Bureau as ‘best practice’ and was awarded the prestigious Civilised Site Award - a Shanghai Expo award for the project having the best safety record, organisation and management.
