De-zincing plant promises industry greener future
Thursday, 04 October, 2007
Australian manufacturing has taken a giant green step forward with the opening of a steel de-zincing plant in Melbourne.
Southern Rocycling's new $17 million facility in Ringwood enables galvanised steel to be stripped of its zinc coating so it can be recycled in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way.
It is the commercialisation of US-developed Meretec technology which promises the manufacturing industry a cleaner, greener future, and the cost benefits of recycling steel and recovering zinc.
The vast majority of steel used in the automotive, building and manufacturing industries is zinc coated (galvanised) to protect against corrosion.
