The Gauge, a workplace created by Lend Lease at Victoria Harbour in Melbourne’s Docklands, has achieved received 6 Star ratings across all three areas of Green Star certification: Office Design, As Built and Interiors, from the Green Building Council of Australia.

The 10,363 square metre development sets a new benchmark in workplace innovation and represents progressive, sustainable office building in the Australian market. Lend Lease occupies two of the building’s six storeys while the remainder has been leased by Fujitsu.

Commenting on the award, Rod Leaver said The Gauge development is an opportunity to demonstrate genuine innovation and best practice in all aspects of development, design, and construction.

“The building responds to the needs of the organisation and our employees and reinforces our commitment to the environment and innovation.

“By incorporating a contemporary edge into the design of the spaces, that recalls the vibrant laneways and bars of Melbourne, and a living green wall that greets visitors upon entry, The Gauge encourages creativity and innovation and addresses the need to attract and develop employees from across generations.

“At the same time, its open plan style fosters business growth and performance and has the flexibility to respond to changing organisational needs,” Mr Leaver said.

This recent achievement also helps to dispel the myth that green buildings can only be delivered at a premium – The Gauge successfully delivered a cutting edge design at a competitive cost.

“Lend Lease deserves recognition for its visionary green leadership,” said GBCA Chairman, Tony Arnel.

“The Gauge has influenced mainstream building practices in Australia by demonstrating that 6 Star Green Star ratings are achievable and affordable. The triple Green Star ratings confirm not only that the design intention was realised, but also that The Gauge has delivered the highest standard of interior environment,” Mr Arnel said.

“The building is setting a world class benchmark for commercial green buildings and new standards in modern building design, helping to leave a positive legacy for future generations,” Mr Leaver concluded.

Notes to Editors

• The Green Building Council of Australia launched the Green Star environmental rating system for buildings in 2003. Green Star, which is recognised as Australia’s national environmental rating system, evaluates the green initiatives of building projects based on a number of criteria, including energy and water efficiency, indoor environmental quality and materials.

• As a leading fully integrated property solutions provider, Lend Lease strives for change, innovation, and best practice in sustainable development. We challenge existing environmental standards to set new global benchmarks for business.

• The name of the building communicates its status as a measure of Lend Lease’s progress in green development. The design of The Gauge required an uncompromising commitment to smarter development to respond to its positioning within Victoria Harbour, a precinct which embraces and promotes ecologically sustainable development.

• The Gauge forms a key plank of the reimagined Masterplan and Victoria Harbour - which has already set a benchmark in urban development and green living, boasting the highest concentration of green buildings in Australia.
