EcoForum keynote speakers

Wednesday, 02 March, 2011

The EcoForum Conference & Exhibition in Sydney on 9-11 March will have some excellent keynote speakers. Here is a snapshot of some interesting talks.

Land and groundwater remediation

Heating contaminated soil on site can greatly accelerate the removal of many contaminants. In a presentation by American electrothermal technology expert Dr Bruce McGee, remediation practitioners will hear about various in-situ thermal enhanced remediation technologies and how they can be combined with other approaches like bioremediation and oxidation. Dr McGee will use a number of case studies to illustrate how these methods have been used.

Water cycle sustainability

Did you know that the highly energy-intensive activated sludge process is unlikely to play a major part in water treatment schemes in the future? Chris Hertle from GHD will look at some old and new treatment schemes that maximise resource recovery from wastewater. These include the use of mini hydro in water and wastewater systems, anaerobic treatment systems for converting organics to energy, physical and chemical systems for nutrient recovery, management of household wastes and use of membrane systems.

Climate change and water

In his presentation, Dr Graeme Pearman, former Chief of Atmospheric Research at CSIRO, will look at the challenges involved in communicating the climate change risk message in a way that means it is listened to, understood and incorporated in policy development. This includes building solutions that are more holistic and valuable to the wider community, delivering win-win outcomes and hedging risk in the absence of definitive solutions.

Waste and resource recovery

Dr Dan Godamunne has been instrumental in establishing the remanufacturing operation of Fuji Xerox in Australia. He has been at the forefront of the development of more than 900 remanufacturing programs, including enhancements to the design of products that have produced close to $250 million in savings by Fuji Xerox Australia alone. In his presentation, Dr Godamunne will give delegates the lowdown on product life cycle analysis and design for reusability, remanufacturing and material recycling.
