City of Swan residents are keen to think green
The City of Swan’s Thinking Green sustainability living workshops have had another successful year, with Mayor Mick Wainwright reporting high attendance levels for 2017.
As explained by Wainwright, Thinking Green is a series of free community workshops presented by the City at local libraries. Over 650 community members attended 26 events held from January to June 2017, with an average of 25 attendees per workshop.
“The average number of attendees per workshop in 2017 was higher than 2016, and participant feedback was once again overwhelmingly positive,” Wainwright said.
“It’s great to see that there is a strong interest and enthusiasm throughout the community to learn more about sustainable living.”
The Introduction to Birds of Prey workshop held in Gidgegannup in April attracted the largest crowd, with 45 people in attendance. The Organic Veggie Gardening and Introduction to Beekeeping workshops were also reportedly very popular.
Deputy Mayor David Lucas said the Thinking Green workshop series has become “a popular fixture of the City’s environmental calendar” since its debut back in 2014, seeking to “inspire and encourage participants to change their lifestyle in order to improve their wellbeing and be kinder to the environment”.
Lucas said the City has a strong environmental focus, both on reducing its own carbon footprint and helping the community to do the same. “While the City works hard to be more sustainable as an organisation,” he said, “we also actively encourage the community to ‘think green’ and help them achieve a greener lifestyle where possible.”
