Australian law firm launches sustainability report
Henry Davis York (HDY) claims it is the first Australian law firm and one of only a handful worldwide to compile a sustainability report, which is independently audited and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) compliant.
“We are taking the lead in this area because we believe transparency and accountability of our business to our stakeholders is paramount," Sharon Cook, HDY managing partner, said.
"The report, titled Imagine, is a reflection of who we are, how we do business and what we hold ourselves accountable for. We needed to step out of the legal industry in which we operate and look at ourselves as part of a global community.
“While helping to define HDY, the report gives us surety that we are delivering our best for our communities and our environment."
Cook believes the report has focused the firm on managing risk, better understanding its business environment, reducing long-term costs and negative impacts, as well as strengthening relationships with stakeholders.
The report covers the firm’s collective sustainability efforts and outcomes over the financial year to 30 June 2008. It will enable annual comparisons of the firm’s performance. This first edition of the report has highlighted areas for further development for the firm such as benchmarking and measurement, stakeholder engagement and internal communication.
