Energy sub-metering installed for Baptist Community Services
Providing visibility of energy use to help meet reduction target
Baptist Community Services - NSW & ACT (BCS), a not-for-profit Christian care organisation that serves the elderly and people living with a disadvantage, has developed a resource reduction policy following a commitment to reduce its energy consumption by 2% each year until 2020. To help meet this target, BCS has selected mySmart CTI as its metering provider, to gain complete visibility of its energy usage.
BCS has developed a clear strategy to reduce use of resources such as water, waste, fossil fuels, paper and toxic material, while promoting the use of natural products. To begin implementing this strategy, the first step was to manage its resource use. The organisation turned to mySmart CTI to provide a sub-metering system.
BCS’ energy supplier provides one overall consumption figure, compared with sub-metering, which gives detailed information regarding the locations of the highest areas of consumption. This provides insight as to the areas that need improving, assisting BCS in meeting the goals set out in its resource reduction policy.
Across NSW and ACT, BCS has 22 sites which could be suitable for sub-metering in the near future.
Jodie Rutherford, Environmental Sustainability Manager at BCS, believes the endeavours to date to reduce energy consumption have been educational. “We have ambitious expectations for big energy reductions within the company, and sub-metering provides the initial stepping stone to make this achievable,” Rutherford said.
“We hope sub-metering is just the beginning of some very positive changes to Baptist Community Services; it will provide us with the tools to see where we use the most energy and help us reach our target of reducing energy consumption 2% per year until 2020.”
Peter Garrett, Managing Director of mySmart CTI, believes the popularity of sub-metering will increase as more businesses gain insight into the benefits: “The detailed information provided as part of the sub-metering system enables businesses to specifically target certain areas of their building that need to reduce the energy usage,” he said.
