One month to go until AWRE Summit

In the midst of the resource recovery crisis, Australia’s Waste and Recycling Expo (AWRE) has expanded its Summit program to meet industry demand, bringing together 250 Australian decision-makers to participate in the program, titled ‘Reality Check on Recovered Resources + Residuals.’

Running on 26 July at ICC Sydney, the AWRE 2023 Summit is designed to be a reality check for the industry this year, a much-needed wake-up call on the state of our current resource recovery system in Australia. Hosted by NWRIC, WCRA and ACOR, the summit will cover topical areas including the state of the resource recovery system, the reality, roadblocks and solutions to help us progress towards national targets, and the challenges and policies surrounding residuals management in Australia.

The program includes:

We’ve Regressed — The State of Our Resource Recovery System

Moderated by Tony Khoury, Executive Director of the Waste Contractors & Recyclers Association of NSW, the panel will challenge roadblocks such as inadequate data collection and analysis and insufficient infrastructure and investment in industry. While highlighting the fragmentation of policies across states and territories, the session will also explore possible solutions to this challenge.

How to Support a Thriving Resource and Recovery Sector

Moderated by Jelena Hercegovac, General Manager, Environment & Sustainability at Repurpose It, the session will delve into the reality, roadblocks and solutions for Australia’s resource recovery and recycling system. The panel will review the impact of current export bans and explore practical steps and innovative solutions that need to be taken to drive progress.

Residuals Management

Moderated by Rick Ralph, CEO of NWRIC, the session will be led by Phillip Manners, Director of the Centre for International Economics. Manners will address the challenges of managing residual waste streams, exploring topics such as landfill and waste-to-energy solutions, social licence and infrastructure hurdles, and the need for effective nationwide policies and regulations.
