Solution for polystyrene waste

David Barke's Retravision, in Rosebud, was filling and paying for the removal of several bins with expanded polystyrene or EPS each week. This was not only costly, but the bins took up a large area of valuable space.

A Mil-tek EPS Press model 900 was installed in the warehouse and the waste simply put into the press as goods were unpacked. The press was started when the hopper was full and the volume reduced about 40-1.

Compacting the EPS not only saves space and waste collection cost, but can make it viable to separate, transport and recycle.

The Mil-tek unit grinds the EPS waste up into small pieces and compacts these into blocks which are easily stacked on pallets or placed in bags or crates for transport to the recycler.

With the installation of a Mil-tek unit, the store has managed to reduce its collection by several bins per week. They have also freed up space for stock and created a cleaner and safer working environment.

"The EPS900 is so simple and safe to operate and keep the workplace clean. It has reduced the number of waste bins we required and frequency of pick-ups and reduced waste cost significantly," says Ron Dyall, warehouse and stock coordinator.
